A founder handing the task to a familiar brand is buying the absence of research, the reassurance of an operation with a support department and a legal team, and the reasonable expectation that the vendor will outlast the LLC. Plenty of owners would rather pay a premium than spend an evening comparing strangers, and there is nothing irrational in that.

The Rate, and What Is Attached to It

Agent service at LegalZoom runs $249 a year. Our check turned up no introductory discount, which is more candor than this category usually manages, and the subscription renews itself on schedule unless you intervene.

So the pricing is transparent. The question is what the $249 is buying that a $99 appointment is not, and the answer has to be found in the brand rather than the work, because the work is fixed by statute. Whoever holds the role receives service of process at a Hawaii street address during business hours and gets it to you. That is the job description in full. The state record does not note which company you selected or what you paid for it.

Held for five years, the difference is $750. That figure covers a Hawaii annual report many times over, with change to spare.

Hawaii Will Not Let the Company Cover This Itself

Owners looking at $249 sometimes reach for the free option and discover Hawaii has closed it. Under HRS § 425R-4, part of the state's version of the Model Registered Agents Act, an entity may not serve as its own registered agent. Three categories qualify and none of them is your LLC: a person residing in the islands, a company organized here, or an outside company holding Hawaii authority, each keeping a real business location at a state street address that can take delivery of process.

A resident owner may still take the role personally, and some do. The cost is a different currency. Timing has one practical wrinkle worth noting. Because the LegalZoom subscription renews on its own, the useful moment to start is a few weeks before your anniversary date rather than a few days after the charge appears.
