A Legal Platform, or Just the Hawaii Appointment

The Rocket Lawyer pricing described here is what the company published at our July 2026 review. Nothing below depends on you trusting us about their service, only on the figures matching what you find on their site.

The Subscription Is a Real Product

Rocket Lawyer sells a legal platform: a document library, contracts and notices you can assemble without drafting from scratch, and attorney consultations available to members. For a business that regularly needs a lease clause reviewed or a demand letter sent, that library is a legitimate substitute for hourly billing, and the agent appointment tucked inside it is a sensible convenience. Buy the platform because you will use the platform, and the arrangement is fair.

Their pricing is also refreshingly stable. Agent service is $125 a year, no introductory rate found in our check, and the figure does not shift depending on which membership tier you are sitting on. That last detail is unusual and deserves credit: many vendors reprice a component to make an upgrade look inevitable, and this one does not.

Where the Fit Goes Wrong

The mismatch is scope rather than honesty. A great many businesses that end up on Rocket Lawyer's checkout page want one thing: a lawful name and street address on the state record so official mail has somewhere to land. If that is the whole need, $125 a year is the ticket price for a legal subscription attached to a service you were going to buy on its own.

Nothing about the platform gets cheaper for going unused. The templates you never open, the consultation hours you never book and the account you sign into once a year are all inside the number. Set against a standalone appointment at $99, the annual difference is $26, which happens to be exactly what Hawaii charges to move the appointment somewhere else.

What We Sell and Where It Stops

One service, one price, renewed at the same price. Our Hawaii office receives service of process and gets it scanned to you before that business day is over. Your public filings carry our street address instead of your home. Compliance reminders track the deadline your entity actually has. There is no document library here, no attorney on call and no tier above the one you bought, which is the honest limitation of a $99 product and the reason it costs $99.

We also decline the cheapest-in-Hawaii line, because BetterLegal publishes $90 a year and that is lower. Among the lowest published rates in the state, held flat at renewal, is the version that survives a fact check.

Changing Agents in a State With No Secretary of State

Half the guidance online tells Hawaii owners to file with a Secretary of State. Hawaii does not have one. Business entity records are kept by Hawaii's Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA), and the registration work happens inside its Business Registration Division.

The filing itself is Form X-7, a document Hawaii uses for this one purpose. It names your company, the agent stepping out and the agent stepping in, and it costs $25, to which the division adds the mandatory $1 State Archives fee applied to permanent records, for $26 collected in total. Paper filings are accepted, as is electronic submission through the platform that took over the state's filing traffic in July 2026.

Qualification of the replacement is worth confirming before you sign anything. The incoming agent needs a genuine Hawaii street address for its office, never a post office box, and must be an individual living here, an entity formed in Hawaii, or an outside entity carrying authority to operate in the state. Hawaii's limited liability company act carries the cross-reference at HRS § 428-107, and the answer it points to is the same in either place: the company cannot fill the role itself.

Sequence matters more than speed. Appoint the new agent, file the X-7, confirm the registry shows the change, and only then close out the Rocket Lawyer membership. Doing it the other way leaves the state's record pointing at a company you no longer pay, and Hawaii treats the record as controlling regardless of what your cancelled subscription says. If the platform is worth keeping for its own sake, keep it. Nothing stops you from holding the membership for documents and moving only the agent line, which is a perfectly ordinary way to end up paying for exactly what you use.
