Two ZenBusiness Prices, One Hawaii Appointment

Say the obvious thing early: this page was written by a competitor. HI Registered Agent.org holds Hawaii appointments for $99 a year, and a reader who moves one over becomes revenue on our side of the ledger. The ZenBusiness numbers quoted here are the rates that company published at our July 2026 check. Treat our conclusions with suspicion and the arithmetic on its own terms.

The Console Is the Real Product

ZenBusiness earns its following on software. Formation paperwork, state notices, filing status and compliance prompts arrive on one screen that behaves like an application instead of a filing cabinet, and among national providers that is a genuine achievement. An owner who wants the whole company administered from a single login has a coherent reason to keep the agent appointment inside that login, and paying a premium for the convenience is a defensible choice rather than a foolish one.

Twelve Months at One Rate, Then Another

Bought by itself, with no formation package in the basket, ZenBusiness opens standalone agent coverage at $99 plus state fees. After that first term the rate becomes $199 a year.

Neither figure is a trick. They simply describe different stretches of calendar, and the Hawaii requirement runs on the longer one, because an entity on the state register keeps an agent appointed for every year it remains active. So $199 is the number attached to the relationship and $99 is the number attached to its first anniversary. The trailing "plus state fees" matters as well: whatever the order sends to the state rides above the advertised figure, so the amount your card clears and the amount on the sales page need not agree.

Six years apart, the gap is five hundred dollars. Underneath both columns sits one line on one state record, worded the same either way.

What Our Column Contains

Ninety-nine dollars, and the reminder that lands a year later says ninety-nine dollars. Nothing steps up, because there is no introductory rate to step up from. A summons handed to our Hawaii office gets scanned and emailed before that business day closes, since your clock starts at delivery rather than at your convenience. Our street address goes on your public filings in place of yours. One optional charge exists and we would rather print it here than surprise you with it: $15 an item if you want ordinary business mail handled the same way as legal process.

We cannot tell you $99 is the smallest number in this state. BetterLegal advertises $90 a year, nine dollars under us, and pretending otherwise would only invite you to check. Among the lowest published Hawaii rates, unchanged at every renewal, is the honest version of the claim.

The X-7 That Ends a ZenBusiness Appointment

Hawaii does not route this through a Secretary of State, because Hawaii has none. Entity records live with the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, which handles business filings through its Business Registration Division, BREG for short.

The instrument is Form X-7, which Hawaii captions under HRS § 425R-7 and uses for nothing but this purpose. It asks for your registered entity name, whoever currently occupies the agent field, and the replacement, with a Hawaii street address attached to the incoming party. The stated filing fee is $25. BREG also collects a mandatory $1 State Archives fee on permanent records, so the amount that actually leaves your account is $26. Paper goes to the division directly, and the change can be filed electronically on the platform Hawaii put into service in July 2026.

Two conditions decide whether the form clears. The replacement must qualify in the first place: a Hawaii resident individual, a Hawaii entity, or an out-of-state entity authorized to do business here, and a post office box will not serve as the address. Your company also cannot name itself, which Hawaii forbids outright and which surprises owners who have done exactly that in other states.

Then there is the order of operations, which is where switches go wrong. Sign with the incoming agent first, submit the X-7 second, watch for the record to update third, and cancel the ZenBusiness plan only after that. Cancel at the front of the sequence and your entity keeps a name in the agent field that nobody is standing behind, which is the one scenario Hawaii's registry cannot tolerate. A last point of proportion. Leaving costs $26. The renewal difference described above is $100 a year, every year, for as long as the company exists. When the exit is cheaper than a single year of the difference, inertia is the only thing keeping the higher price in place.
